So where does all of this leave you with regard to how you think about schooling, education, and their purposes? Note: Here I am particularly interested in how/whether this course has helped you to think about where your ideas about school and education come from and whether they have changed.

As someone who is interested in making media, this class was a helpful reflection upon what would likely be a central pillar in any pieces I’d be making: education. Whether it’s high school, college, or the education I receive informally throughout life, I have a better understanding of the standard portrayal and therefore a more nuanced perspective of how I’ll seek to portray educators, students, and learning as a whole. I became even more tuned into educational issues, especially as it pertains to erasure of true history, queerness, and more. Learning is never done, even when formal education is. Nobody knows everything. Even if they’re convinced that they do.
ReplyDeleteBefore taking this course, I never really thought that pop culture had and influence on something as important in my life like my education. I always thought that pop culture was just a a social aspect of my life. But during this course, I have realized that pop culture influences everything including my education. This course has defiantly given me a better understanding on how what is happening int he world around us is affecting how we are being learned and what is being done in and out of the classroom. Not only did this course give me a better understanding of pop culture and education but just pop culture as a whole.
ReplyDeleteThis was in many ways an eye-opener to how I think about the concept of education. Being raised by two teachers, I was accustomed to the traditional methods of teaching, where they came from, and how they worked. This class added another dimension to it. Looking through this new lens of pop-cultural foundations, my prior knowledge and new knowledge come together and create an enhanced and enriched synopsis of education, its purposes, etc. This "radical experiment" was a great one to do and I feel that this knowledge will be something I retain outside of my career path.
ReplyDeletebecause of this course i was able to expand my initial ideas about educations. My own passion in working with school ages children is quite strong. Understanding the significant impact education has on children's mental and emotional development will undoubtedly help me in achieving my career goals. this course lead me to learn more about this and expand my thinking. i never really connected pop culture and education before and this class changed that for me. before this course i already had a passion for educating youth and helping them in ways our society cannot but after i now understand it better and left with wanting to do more.
ReplyDeleteThis course had really helped me define my already existing thoughts about schooling and education. I already was aware that the schooling system was often unfair and sometimes failed at its purposes. This course also helped me define what the purpose of schooling really was, which was and still is a very broad question. I'm glad we focused on that topic so much as it helped me form my opinions.
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of preconceived idea about education/ schooling and the lenses at which we can analyze its purposes. I think this class helped me look understand under which lense I wanted to view school and its purposes. I don't think they have changed much, but analyzing education through a scope of media/pop-culture was something I never would have done. The cycle of society reflecting pop-culture and popculture reflecting society is something I have taken in and used in other classes as a way to think about the media we consume. I see the schooling system as a damaged institution and education as a privilege but should be a fundamental right. This class has opened my eyes a lot to the standards of learning, the content of classes and why it is the way it is and how damaging and exclusive it can be. Education- something that should be laying the groundwork for the rest of our lives is so misguided and misused.
ReplyDeleteBecause of this course , i was able to expand my mindset as to what i would want to do. Becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable and realizing that everyone in the class has a a different for everything, including two classmates who would want to become teachers after they graduate. I’ve been open to new ideas and discussions from others and having a better idea of pop culture
ReplyDeleteI think this class has helped me in many ways. From the class google doc and being able to view everyone's thoughts on the same topic and seeing how they differ. Or the movie discussions with others who may have taken different things from the movie based on how they see/think about things; bringing new focuses to movies or topics one would not think about before otherwise.
ReplyDeleteThis course helped me understand the components included to define the purposes of school. The course showed me different purposes that I was not fully aware of or did not think it was a purpose of school. My ideas about school expanded and changed as I learned more about the types of outcomes. Before, I was only aware of a couple of reasons all relating to achieving success and contributing to society. Knowing the new reasons made me want to go more in-depth about certain topics.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this class because it helped me realize where my views on education came from and how different people view education. Talking with my classmates and reading people’s ideas in the class Google doc and blog posts gave me fresh perspectives on how pop culture and media influence our ideas about schools and their purpose. I know that my personal view on schools has been affected by the fact that I was born into an immigrant low-class family. My experiences shaped my view on education and the purpose of it. Through this class, I learned more about why certain issues exist in the school system and how stereotypes in movies or books have come to be. I feel I learned a lot about pop culture and how it connects to education.
ReplyDeleteThis class was very interesting to me because I was able to see school from an outside point of view, rather than an anecdote of my own experiences. I enjoyed watching films in this class and analyzing problems shown through the media, and comparing it to modern-day problems in education. I learned a lot through reading "New Kid" and people's documentary presentations about what it is like for students of color to go to public school. Because I am looking to work with children in the future, it is crucial to understand and keep in mind the experiences these students go through. This class was important to me because it wasn't only about education as a subject, but a place where me and my peers could connect over shared experiences, and hear from others about their personal experiences. Also, this class called to my attention the problems with American schooling and how it can cause many kids to burn out or study something for the purpose of making money. I will take the things I learned in this class and not only apply it to my future job, but my life in general.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who really never cared for school this class helped me see it from another view, understanding that some teachers can be a bit racist and some kids as well as white sovereignty with teachers assuming my home life was bad because of my color and race. During this class, it really opened up my mind on how the schooling system sucks for example the day we saw Abid Elementary really represents how schools in America are well schools in "rural" areas unfunded with poor education which is unfair to the children of those areas.
ReplyDeleteThis class has really opened up the way I see other things. I was privileged to be in a well funded school where money wasn't really an issue. Seeing the school in Philly (I think that where it was) with how the teachers are getting underpaid and the school is being very underfunded. Also in that movie where the teacher is basically a parent for them and does whatever she can to help these kids. I really liked how open this class was with how we did these blog posts to the google docs and discussing with our table mates.

ReplyDeleteAs a dental hygiene major I really enjoyed this class, it was sort of like a relaxing period where I can freely think and speak. I knew the basics about schooling, education, equality etc but while being in this class I was able to learn more about the complex schooling system. Talking to my peers and hearing their opinions was an addition on why I enjoyed this class. I will be recommending this course to my friends
This class affected my perception of schools and pop culture in realizing the flaws and the struggles of trying to address its issues. Only because there are so many but also a lot of different and difficult negative assumptions that lead to none of the issues getting fixed. Such as people choosing to turn a blind eye and accept the fact that there are problems but the fact that people aren't prioritizing what issues need to be addressed before jumping into the next problem and attempting to fix it based on social media or whatever pop culture trend. I also realize the importance of the teacher and student dynamics that play into the school system.
ReplyDeleteI initially believed that pop culture had little to no influence on my educational background, I felt as if pop culture was something understood on a more personal and social aspect. Throughout this course, however, I have realized that pop culture has a great influence on the entire world including the realm of education as well. This course taught some of these purposes of school through the films themselves which I found both interesting and surprising. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and learning throughout this course!
ReplyDeleteThis class changed how I think about education because I don't think I thought about the purposes of education very deeply before this class. It was interesting to me to think about the purposes of education and whether I thought schools actually accomplish what they say they want to. Watching media was interesting as well. I liked thinking about ways the movies we saw were not accurate/problematic in how they represented school.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of school is important but I wish it would branch out when it comes to teaching us important stuff we need in our life. This class definitely opened up my eyes to learn more than what I originally put on the second day of class that i haven't even thought about.
ReplyDeleteAfter taking this class, it changed my perspective on how I view education and how it has purposes in films and music. When I first took this class, I had no idea that Pop Culture had any relation with education. After watching episodes and movies during this class, it opened up my eyes to see how different other schools are especially in low funded ones. I really enjoyed walking into this classroom and looking forward to what we will learn and I will definitely recommend this class to other people.
ReplyDeletewhen we firsted started the course i didnt think popculture had an effect on my education. I always saw popculture as a more social thing. but as we progressed through the year i was proved wrong alot, alot of what we saw in class, i never wouldve looked at them through a popculture lens and trying to analyze them. I was able to expand my mindset and start viewing things a little differently. The course has definenetly helped me .
ReplyDeleteTaking this course expanded my knowledge on the education system. I realized that teachers are taken advantage of by being underpaid, having to spend their own money to attend to their classroom’s wants and needs, and sometimes having to do more than teach but to also babysit their students. I also learned about the purposes of school and how it isn’t limited to just education but goes beyond and has an effect on students’ personal and social lives.
ReplyDeleteI overall thoroughly enjoyed this class and learning about the purposes of school and its connection with pop culture. As a future teacher, I find it extremely interesting to see how popular media displays stereotypes within schools and the education system. Education is about equal opportunities for all children and I hope to be an advocate for all children to make sure the education system is meeting their needs.
ReplyDeleteInitially, coming into this course, I didn't really know what it was going to be about. However, it ended up changing my initial thoughts on education and pop culture. I got another set of perspective lens on these topics. I never realized how impactful pop culture is, especially on education which is significant in my life. Moreover, I didn't know we'd be discussing our views and opinions on so many topics such as equality. I loved the freedom we had throughout this course to share our ideas, and really think from different perspectives on different topics. I personally love discussing on different topics, especially injustices , because I loved to spread awareness / inform, which was nice we were able to do in class. Overall, this class surprised me very well and I enjoyed it, I would definitely recommend this class to everyone.
