September 5…Hollywood Goes to High School
Find something (an idea, a claim, an argument, etc.) in Bulman Ch 1 to disagree with. Explain what it is and shy you disagree with it. Note: If you absolutely can’t find something to disagree with, feel free to write about that situation (why you can’t disagree) or simply discuss something that you found interesting in Ch. 1.
September 7…Individualism in U.S. Culture
What other classes have you had in which individualism was discussed? How was it talked about? Is it seen largely as a good thing or a bad thing? If you haven’t encountered it in other classes, react to what you read in the chapter.
September 21…Critical Film Viewing
Share something about the film you watched that you hope to discuss in class. Reply to the comments that name your film so that all of the comments for each film are grouped together. Try to include something from what we have discussed so far in this course (e.g, purposes of school, individualism, opportunity, class and race, teacher and/or student agency, the limits of the art form, etc.).
September 28…Movie #2
How was student agency depicted in the film you watched? You might describe and react to student agency in the film or compare characters in the film and whether/what kinds of agenda they possess. Feel free to also suggest topics for discussion when we meet to discuss.
October 5…Bulman Revisited
Think back to Bulman’s ideas about Hollywood and high school. If possible, share something that you think he got right and also provide critique of some aspect of his ideas.
October 17…Playlists
Please paste the information for one of your songs and the annotation here so that you can share it with the class. Post a comment about two of your classmates’ songs/annotations.
November 14…New Kid
I hope you enjoyed this graphic novel. Why do you think I had you read it? Note: you can answer this by relating it to any of the documentaries, feature films, TV shows or songs we have discussed along the way this semester. You can also write about what New Kid has to say about the purposes of education.
October 24…Documentaries
React to day 1 of our documentaries module. One theme of day 1 is that while many docs strive to be factual, they their truths are shaped by those who make them. How did the class session relate to how you think of documentaries? Feel free to discuss whatever you think makes sense here...
October 26…Thoughts About Documentaries…
Please blog a bit about documentaries as an art form/mode of teaching and learning. You can write about whatever you choose…some possibilities: the documentarian’s role in shaping the presentation of reality, their potential to create social change, their relationship to other forms of pop culture.
November 16…Book Banning
Find something recent from the news about book banning/censorship. You can relate it to the New Kid situation or feel free to write about anything you want to think about/discuss related to the topic.
December 5…Circling Back to Education’s Purposes
So where does all of this leave you with regard to how you think about schooling, education, and their purposes? Note: Here I am particularly interested in how/whether this course has helped you to think about where your ideas about school and education come from and whether they have changed.
